• Design for Recycling Guidelines

Design for recycling offers insight into the compatibility of different elements of a packaging, such as caps, labels or adhesives, with given recycling streams. Design for Recycling Guidelines therefore support the industry on how to improve overall recyclability of plastic products.

Guidelines are living documents, as they are continuously updated based on new laboratory findings, including technology approvals. You can explore the interactive layout below or download the latest version of the Guidelines.

For features of packaging that are not yet covered by the Design for Recycling Guidelines, testing is recommended via the Recyclability Evaluation Protocols.

The RecyClass Guidelines are based on a traffic-lights system:

Full compatibility

Green column gathers the preferred design features, that guarantee the best recyclability and quality of the recyclate.

Limited compatibility

Yellow column lists the second choices for each packaging feature, that have been tested or are known to slightly impact the recycling process and/or the quality of the recyclate.

Low compatibility

Red column classifies the detrimental and disqualifying features that should be avoided when designing packaging, as these strongly impact the recycling process and/or the quality of the recyclate.

The RecyClass Online Tool simulates the recyclability of packaging according to RecyClass Methodology and in line with the information supplied in the Guidelines. The Tool offers more insights into the recyclability grading system.

Natural and White PP Containers

The same design for recycling recommendations apply to natural and white plastic packaging, to preserve the high-value of these materials and to ensure the availability of both white and natural recycled plastic on the markets. However, natural and white packaging should be sorted into two distinct streams and recycled separately.
