• Design for Recycling Guidelines

Design for recycling offers insight into how different components of plastic packaging must be manufactured to be compatible with recycling. It considers elements such as caps, labels, and additives and their behaviour in a given recycling stream. Design for Recycling Guidelines support users on how they can improve the overall recyclability of their product.

 

Design for Recycling Guidelines are developed by:

  • The European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) for PET bottles;
  • Petcore Europe for PET Trays Thermoforms;
  • RecyClass for all other packaging.

 

Guidelines are living documents, as they are continuously updated by plastics value chain experts based on new laboratory findings, including technology approvals.
For this reason, it may be possible that all features of packaging are not yet covered by the Design for Recycling Guidelines. In this case, you are invited to test your packaging with RecyClass following the Recyclability Evaluation Protocols.

 

The RecyClass Guidelines are based on a
traffic-lights system:

 

Full compatibility

Green column gathers the preferred design features, that guarantee the best recyclability and quality of the recyclate.

Limited compatibility

Yellow column lists the second choices for each packaging features, that have been tested, known, or supposed to slightly impact the recycling and/or the quality of the recyclate.

Low compatibility

Red column classifies the detrimental and disqualifying features that should be avoided when designing a packaging, as strongly impacting the recycling and/or the quality of the recyclate.
