RecyClass approves first labels applied on white HDPE bottles as fully compatible with recycling
19 Nov 2024

Since its release last July, the RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for Labels & Adhesives applied on HDPE Containers1 has already been used for the recognition of innovative technologies. This marks a significant advancement in the recyclability of plastic packaging decorations.

The protocol results from rigorous testing coordinated by the RecyClass White Packaging Task Force at laboratory and semi-industrial scales. The Task Force assessed how labels and adhesives behave during the grinding and cold-washing steps of the recycling process. The protocol specifically evaluates the impact of friction on label releasability, providing valuable insights into the recyclability of HDPE containers in real-world scenarios.

With this protocol in place, companies can apply for a recyclability approval for their labels and adhesives used on HDPE containers. Avery Dennison is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to label releasibility, having become the first company to secure full compatibility approval letters for three of their innovative solutions using acrylic emulsion adhesives:

  • PP60 TOP CAVITATED S7000/S7000ER
  • PE85 TOP WHITE S692N
  • PP60 TOP WHITE S692N

RecyClass is committed to advancing the understanding of label’s effect on rigid packaging recyclability and is currently conducting further tests to explore the possibility of extending this evaluation procedure to other plastic streams and types of labels.

Thanks to such technological advances and global harmonisation of packaging design from the conception phase, the entire plastic value chain will stay ahead of the European legislative requirements enforced by the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), facilitating the transition to circular packaging solutions.
