Recyclability

RecyClass
testing protocols

To support companies in evaluating the recyclability of innovative technologies, RecyClass developed a set of standardised testing protocols, which replicate state-of-the-art recycling processes in Europe at a laboratory scale. All tests are carried out by independent, RecyClass Recognised Testing Facilities and are overseen by RecyClass Technical Committees.

WHY Testing matters ?

By building a foundation of science-based evidence on what truly works in real recycling systems, we can move closer to achieving true circularity for plastics. Thanks to the testing commissioned by external companies and the ones conducted by the RecyClass Technical Committees, RecyClass generates knowledge on the key factors hindering plastic recyclability. RecyClass Design for Recycling Guidelines and Online Tool are updated to reflect the latest scientific findings from such testing.

Starting a testing process with
RecyClass can help you:

  • Verify your innovative packaging or product is compatible with a specific recycling stream
  • Improve the design of your packaging or product
  • Increase transparency and build credibility
along the value chain

Positive testing results following the RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Procotols lead to the release of a Technology Approval.

Full Evaluation protocols

Recyclability Evaluation Protocols and Sorting Evaluation Protocol establish a standardised methodology to test the recyclability and sortability of a technology or product within a specific recycling stream.

quick test procedures

These shortened testing methods enable companies to assess specific design features within a given stream. Quick Test Procedures can be carried out by companies, Certification Bodies or Recognised Testing Facilities, while the shortened Protocols can only be carried out by the latter.
