RecyClass Surpasses 500 Recyclability Tests, Supporting Industry Readiness for PPWR
As the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) starts reshaping packaging requirements across Europe, RecyClass has reached a significant milestone: more than 500 recyclability evaluations of plastic packaging features have been completed in accordance with its science-based Protocols. This achievement demonstrates the growing need for robust scientific data to support recyclable packaging design and help companies prepare for upcoming regulatory requirements.
“The more than 500 evaluations conducted by RecyClass have contributed to a better understanding on how to tackle the key challenges of plastic packaging recyclability," said Paolo Glerean, Chairman of RecyClass. "The obtained results demonstrate that innovation, packaging functionality and recyclability can successfully go hand in hand. Building on this valuable knowledge, RecyClass provides companies with a reliable framework to assess and improve recyclability as they prepare for PPWR implementation."
The milestone reflects the combined efforts of value chain stakeholders that have submitted technologies for evaluation, as well as dedicated testing campaigns commissioned by RecyClass Technical Committees. All assessments were conducted by independent third-party testing facilities, and have played a crucial role in the continuous development of the RecyClass Design for Recycling Guidelines.
The results of the evaluations have supported the validation of numerous packaging innovations designed to improve recyclability while maintaining product performance. Notable examples include laminating adhesives for flexible packaging, alternatives to nitrocellulose-based inks, plastic-based trigger sprayer components replacing metal springs, and adhesive solutions for labels on PET and HDPE bottles. Detailed information about the technologies evaluated as compatible with recycling streams is publicly available on the RecyClass website.
With the first PPWR provisions beginning to apply from 12 August 2026, companies across the packaging value chain are increasingly seeking reliable methodologies and tools to evaluate the recyclability of their packaging solutions. RecyClass has developed a comprehensive fact-based approach, supported by Recyclability Evaluation Protocols, Design for Recycling Guidelines, certification schemes and technical expertise, enabling stakeholders to assess and verify packaging recyclability with confidence. These tools are compatible with both EN 13430 and EN 18120 standards, supporting a much-needed, harmonised approach to plastic packaging circularity in Europe.
About RecyClass
RecyClass is a non-profit, cross-industry initiative advancing recyclability, bringing transparency to the origin of plastic waste, and establishing a harmonised approach toward recycled plastic calculation & traceability in Europe. RecyClass develops Recyclability Evaluation Protocols and scientific testing methods for innovative plastic materials, which serve as the base for the Design for Recycling Guidelines and the RecyClass Online Tool. RecyClass established Recyclability Certifications for plastic packaging, Sorting Process, Recycling Process, and Recycled Plastics Traceability Certifications for plastic products.
