Laminated tube PBL 220/11 HD by Huhtamaki approved by RecyClass

The laminated tube technology ‘PBL 220/11 HD’[1] developed by Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging Europe and its partner Plastuni Lisses, member of Somater Group, show that it is fully compatible with recycling in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers stream, the findings of an independent laboratory testing confirm. The analysis was carried out by the Institut für Kunststofftechnologie und -recycling (IKTR), as per the RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for HDPE containers.

The technology is a polyethylene laminated tube containing an EVOH barrier concentration below 3% of the total weight of the packaging and compatibilized with a PE tie layer. The tube, with its slight direct print, was tested with both its HDPE shoulders and its HDPE cap.

The laboratory results show that ‘PBL 220/11 HD’ tube technology is fully compatible with the current European HDPE recycling stream provided they are used under specific conditions. These include, among others[2], a requirement that any other component like valves, liners, seals, etc., must be made of PE and that the final artwork applied on the tube is compatible with recycling.

The laboratory testing shows that the recycled plastic generated after the recycling process can be used in high-value applications such as HDPE bottles with up to 25% concentration.

Applying polyethylene cap in tubes is an important development within the packaging industry, as it replaces the currently used polypropylene caps. This in turn results in decreasing the quantity of polypropylene in the HDPE recycling stream and improving the quality of the final recycled plastics.

The Huhtamaki ‘PBL 220/11 HD’ tube is an example of a technology that effectively implements design for recycling principles and contributes to improving quality recycling of HDPE containers in Europe.
